What happens when two of the finest directors from Hollywood come together? They plan to direct a trilogy based on the famous cartoon character, Tintin. Oscar-winning directors, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are set to make a new film trilogy about beloved comic strip journalist and adventurer Tintin.

Both filmmakers have long been fans of the heroic young character, who was created by Belgian illustrator Georges Remi, under the pen name of Herge. The announcement came just a week before the 100th anniversary of the birth of Herge who died in 1983.

Moulinsart Studios, which holds the rights to Tintin, announced in March that Spielberg and his company, Dreamworks, had planned to produce at least one film on Tintin.

The Tintin trilogy will broadcast work by Jackson’s New Zealand-based special effects house, WETA Digital, which was behind the wonderful effects in his highly acclaimed The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The two directors have also selected three stories from Herge’s original The Adventures of Tintin series for the trilogy.

Tintin has continued to enthral comics readers around the world with his adventures since his debut in 1929.

In addition to Herge’s comic books and the Tintin magazine, which was published from 1946 until the early 1990s, the heroic character was brought to life in radio dramas, a few animated and live action films, two television series, several stage shows and some video games too.

Tintin fans around the globe celebrated his 75th birthday in 2004.
