People who smoke cigarettes will tell you that they can’t go through their workday without stopping for “smoke breaks.” People who don’t smoke cigarettes will tell you that they don’t think it’s fair.
Smoking starts off as a fad, develops into a habit, and ends up as an addiction. Smoking does not have any positive side. Smoking only kills. A few years back, governments woke up to the dangers of smoking and directed massive campaigns via print-ads and TV commercials, to educate people. As part of these campaigns, cigarette companies were asked to put pictures and/or ‘statutory warning’ to remind smokers of the dangers of smoking. To some extent, people would pay heed to these measures. However, a majority of smokers turned a blind eye to the health-risks associated with smoking.
Why is smoking injurious to health? A cigarette contains many harmful chemicals including some cancer-causing elements (known as carcinogens). Blood circulation is restricted due to smoking. Erectile Dysfunction (a form of impotency) is observed in men who smoke. Our body requires some minerals for functioning properly. Smoking, however, consumes the minerals present inside the body, and weakens the bones. Research has shown that over eight percent of lung cancer is the direct result of smoking,
Women, who smoke excessively, face problems conceiving. It would not be incorrect to label the cigarette as ‘the cancer stick’. Isn’t it? Passive smoking is not any better than active smoking. In fact, passive smoking might be more dangerous. Smokers believe that ‘smoke breaks’ help them perform better at work. How can one get rid of smoking?
While therapies, smoking meters and hypnosis can be useful, you would not be able to quit smoking unless you ‘really’ want to. The will and determination to stop falling prey to the cancer stick can be more useful than all other things combined. A revolutionary product, called the e-cigarette, can also be given a try. Remember, life is precious. It is the greatest gift of God. Don’t waste this gift being a slave to nicotine.
