
The home video industry of Nigeria popularly known as Nollywood may be banned from filmmaking for one year due to the outrage in the Muslim community against sex-video tape. The controversial video tape of eight-minute shows a northern Nigerian film actress nude and sexually involved with her boyfriend.
The leaked clip is being circulated over mobile phones is fuelling anger of dominant ethnic groups in the generally conservative north (Kano) and has made the politicians call for one year ban on local film making.
Kano state Filmmakers’ Association has already expelled 17 actors who are assumed to be involved in the making of the video citing immoral acts of drunkenness and fornication.
Nollywood is a multi-billion dollar movie industry producing some 200 ‘home videos’ every month, which makes it the third largest in the world after the United States and India. Earlier Nollywood films were produced with analog video, such as Betacam SP, but keeping the pace with modern times it has now switched over to using digital video technology.
