Sam Mendes, the director who has an Oscar to his credit has announced his plans of making the first movie on the George Eliot novel Middlemarch. The director, who is the husband of Titanic fame Kate Winslet, is famous for directing US blockbuster movies like American Beauty and Jarhead.

Andrew Davies, who made the 1994 Middlemarch mini-series for the BBC, is this time working on the script of the movie. Mendes will start the project the next year, but no roles have yet been assigned.

Pippa Harris from Mendes’ production company, Neal Street Productions, said,

Sam’s first film was for an American studio, so he started off in a slightly different place than other British directors. But he’s as determined to tell stories about England as he is about America.

The Oscar winning director says that his career is purely ‘circumstantial’. He adds that the projects kept coming his way and he happily did them. The director, who is known for perfectly handling subjects related to extraordinary other worlds is this time working on a subject close to his heart.
