The 59 year old Hong Kong director who had quit direction 18 years ago in favour of teaching and film editing has made a big comeback.
Patrick Tam, whose last directorial venture My Heart is That Eternal Rose released as far back as 1989, has swept the 2007 Hong Kong Film Awards winning five prizes for his movie After This Our Exile. The movie narrates the story of a gambler who compels his son to steal for survival.

He won the awards for best director, film and screenplay categories, whereas Ian Gouw, child actor, who played an important role in the movie won best supporting actor and newcomer awards.

Patrick is one of the best film editors in Hong Kong. Wong Kar-wai, film director, known for his unique, highly visual style of romantic art films, is popularly known as a student of Patrick Tam. Patrick was the editor for Wong Kar-wai’s Days of Being Wild (1991) and Ashes of Time (1994).
Patrick’s co-nominees in the Hong Kong Film Awards in the best film and best director categories included the respected director Johnnie To for his gangster movies Election 2 and Exiled, respectively. Perhaps, not many know that Patrick was the editor for Johnnie’s 2005 venture, Election.
