
The Golden Globes Awards yesterday declared their nominations. Globes nominations are announced first and appear important, as they set the tone for more prestigious awards like Oscars. The Golden Globe awards are given out annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and are a key indicator of which movies will compete for Oscars.
Babel holds the top position and earned seven nominations for Golden Globe awards. Babel, a movie that explores cultural gaps among people around the world, is also nominated for best film drama, to lead all other films.
The Departed, a crime thriller, earned six nominations for top movie drama followed by Bobby, Little Children and The Queen.
Dreamgirls also earned five nominations for the best picture musical or comedy along with Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Little Miss Sunshine, The Devil Wears Prada and Thank You For Smoking.

Best actress nominees:
Kate Winslet in Little Children, Helen Mirren for The Queen, Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal, Penelope Cruz for Spanish film Volver and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Sherrybaby.
Best actor nominees:
Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated as the best actor in film drama for two movies Blood Diamond and The Departed along with Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness, Peter O’Toole for Venus and Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.
Sacha Baron Cohen earned a nomination for a best actor in a movie musical or comedy alongside Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Others were: Aaron Eckhart in Thank You For Smoking; Chiwetel Ejiofor in Kinky Boots and Will Ferrell for Stranger Than Fiction.
Best foreign language films:
In this category were Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, which is told in an ancient Mayan language; and Clint Eastwood’s Letters From Iwo Jima, which is spoken in Japanese. Others in the list were: Mexican fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth; director Pedro Almodovar’s Volver and Germany’s The Lives of Others.

I am extremely honored. I have been trying to let Borat know this great news but for the last four hours both of Kazakhstan’s telephones have been engaged.
Golden Globe winners will be named in a ceremony in Beverly Hills on January 15. The Oscars will be named by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on February 25.
