Mel Gibson is always good for a surprise, and his latest surprise is Apocalypto and that it is a remarkable film is another if you have watched ‘The Passion of the Christ’. The new project is about the waning days of the Mayan civilization, the picture provides a trip to a place one’s never been before, offering hitherto unseen sights of exceptional vividness and power.
In its debut weekend, “Apocalypto” garnered $14.2 million in box-office receipts, according Media by Numbers LLC, an Encino, Calif.-based movie tracking firm.
This week its blood on the screens I guess, as ‘Apocalypto’ gets its chief competition in the action/thriller/big-movie category from “Blood Diamond,” released by Time Warner Inc.’s about civil war in Sierra Leone. The action movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is one of several films coming out this season that focuses on the tragic and violent story of how diamonds — commandeered by warring militias and smuggled to the West — were used to finance the guerilla warfare that tore apart Sierra Leone from 1992 to 2002.

But talking about this weeks top movie, ‘Apocalypto’ which was already in the news for Mel Gibson’s public persona by the publicity surrounding Gibson’s arrest on suspicion of drunken driving this summer. During that arrest, Gibson made anti-Semitic remarks, for which he later apologized. Well, as they say in Hollywood and everywhere else, no publicity is bad publicity, right?
