
The new James Bond star Daniel Craig was stirred after winning his first award as 007.
Craig was named best actor at the Evenings Standard British Film Awards for his work in Casino Royale. Now Craig will be hoping to follow it up next week with a Bafta, where he is up against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Peter O’Toole.
Judi Dench won the best actress award for her portrayal of a predatory schoolteacher in ‘Notes on a Scandal’ beating out Oscar favorite Helen Mirren, for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in ‘The Queen.’
The best picture award went to ‘United 93,’ a harrowing dramatization of the hijacking of a 9/11 flight.
Sacha Baron Cohen won the Peter Sellers Award for comedy.
Peter Morgan bagged screenplay award for two scripts - ‘The Queen’ and ‘The Last King of Scotland.’
Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle won the Technical Achievement award for his work on ‘The Last King of Scotland’ and ‘Brothers of the Head.’ While The Queen’s director, Stephen Frears, received the Alexander Walker Special Award ‘for making British film reverberate around the world’.
The Evening Standard awards are sponsored by London’s afternoon newspaper and selected by a jury of film critics.
