Directed by Robert Towne, Ask the Dust, is a movie based on the famed autobiographical 1939 novel of John Fante. Regarded a legend for his classic movie Chinatown based on Los Angeles, his Ask the Dust will fail to live up to that expectations.
The movie revolves round the life of a struggling Italian writer named Arturo Bandini played by Collin Farrell. The movie is a pure representation of the depressing period when Arturu was trying to make a name of his own among the writers guild in Los Angeles. While his career was in the flourishing period he is attracted towards a Mexican Barmaid (Salma Hayek).
The movie might have been much better although. The film-makers need to know that not always are they lucky enough with their actors, as two good looking couple doesn’t always make a good movie: and Ask the Dust should prove the point as neither Fante’s adaptation of the autobiographical novel nor his lead roles plays a convincing part in the movie.
