
Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s acclaimed film ‘Volver’ won the best picture and earned best director award today at the Goya Awards.
In addition Almodovar’s favorite leading lady Penelope Cruz walked off with the Best Actress for her role as a grieving Spanish mother in the drama.
‘Volver’ tells the story of Raimunda, played by Cruz, a young and hard-working wife of an unemployed husband whose roving eye falls upon her teenage daughter, and of Raimunda’s revenge.
But the gothic fairy tale ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’ by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, earned seven awards.
Meanwhile, Argentine film ‘Las Manos’, by Alejandro Doria, won for best Latin American movie, over ‘American Visa’ by Juan Carlos Valdivia of Bolivia; ‘En la cama’, by Matias Bize of Chile; and ‘Sonar no cuesta nada’, by Rodrigo Triana of Colombia.
Cruz, also an Oscar nominee for best actress in her thanksgiving words said,
This award is very important, very special for me. I am going to try not to cry because I’m a disaster, and these 30 seconds are not going to be enough.
